How much does a space heater cost to run? Price per hour in every state
At the U.S. average residential rate of 18.19¢/kWh, it costs about $0.27 per hour. It ranges from $0.19 in North Dakota to $0.69 in Hawaii.
- Assumption: A 1,500 W portable heater on its high setting. Most cycle on and off with a thermostat, so real cost per hour is often lower; run time is what drives the bill.
- Run 4 hours a day for a 30-day month: $33 at the U.S. average, $22 in North Dakota, $83 in Hawaii.
- Formula: kWh used × your rate. Your own bill's ¢/kWh is more accurate than a state average.
